Referendum O is so hostile to grassroots citizen groups that liberal groups like Common Cause and conservative groups like the Colorado Union of Taxpayers are UNITED IN OPPOSITION to Referendum O. WE must defeat Referendum O to save our constitutional process of checks and balances for all Colorado citizens, regardless of political views. Thanks for visiting our website! This grassroots effort to defend the First Amendment from its overt enemies needs all the help it can get!

Read carefully the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights, printed at the top of this page. Among other sacred liberties, it guarantees your right to petition the government for reforms.

Now the statists in Denver want to take that right away from you. They know they can't get away with just banning a constitutional right in the legislature. Instead, they have to trick you into giving up, eroding, subverting, and voting away your rights, piece by piece. DON'T DO IT!

You may think petitions are no big deal, even something of a nuisance. You may have never even signed a petition before. But petitions are the vehicle for every major citizen reform in recent Colorado history--term limits, tax limits, campaign finance, environmental protection, ethics reform, and on and on. If you simply believe citizens have a right to vote on ballot issues, you believe in the petition process.

Even if you disagreed with the outcome of some of those ballot issues, recognize that each one GAVE YOU THE RIGHT TO VOTE! That is all any petition ever does--it does not change any law by itself, even with a million signatures. A petition simply gives you the right to vote. A self-governing people who surrender that right are slowly committing political suicide.

Your constitutional rights are connected in a logical and linear manner.
They want to take your right to vote away from you, not directly, but by taking away the ballot issues on which you can vote. Will you consent? We hope not. Even if you don't consent, will you sit idly by, like most people, and do nothing to stop them? Will you rationalize your laziness by saying you don't like politics, and this is someone else's fight?

Or will you stand up like an American and FIGHT FOR FREEDOM?

Ref. "O" is NOT about reducing the total number of ballot issues or constitutional amendments. The legislature has put FOUR constitutional amendments on the ballot this year, unlike a citizen group that offers one. The politicians say we have too many constitutional amendments, and yet their "solution" to this non-problem is to offer yet another constitutional amendment! Two-thirds of all constitutional amendments come from the legislature. Ref. "O" does NOTHING to restricted these hypocrites in the legislature from putting on as many ballot issues as THEY want. The only attack is on YOUR rights.

We must never surrender our God-given freedom to these cynical, power-hungry politicians. But passive resistance is not enough. We must educate the average citizens, who are products of government schools that no longer teach any limits on government power. Government is not our friend or Big Brother. All the legal rights we have protect us from only one thing--government abuse. Freedom is only that fragile shelter, that small clearing we have carved out over centuries of effort, and it protects us only from predatory and bullying government power.

The Founding Fathers knew that well, which is why they bequeathed us a Bill of Rights. No right is a grant from government; all are gifts from God. Government does not hand us our rights, but they incessantly try to take them away. That is why we have a written Constitution, that only We the People can change. The politicians want to block our access to our own Constitution, which is the people's law that restricts the power of government. If only politicians have the keys to our Constitution, only they can invoke its protections. Of course, they won't, because it is AGAINST THEM that we most need the Constitution's protection!

In this case, we cannot delegate our defense to combat soldiers. We must have the love of liberty in our hearts, or we shall not deserve its continued blessings. We must be willing to fight for our freedom, here and now. "The price of liberty is eternal vigilance."

The right to petition is one of the great checks and balances on the political power of corrupt governments. It was recognized in England in the Magna Carta ins 1215, almost 800 years ago. Our state Constitution acknowledges it is a reserved power of the people. Government is not our master. It is our servant. When it goes astray, petitions allow us to direct it back to the proper path.

Remember these words?
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness."

That is the key sentence of the Declaration of Independence, our nation's birth certificate, America's reason for being. Heed the call-- IT IS TIME TO STAND UP FOR AMERICA.

Here is what our state constitution says on the subject, in the first two sentences of its Bill of Rights:
  • Section 1. Vestment of political power. All political power is vested in and derived from the people; all government, of right, originates from the people, is founded upon their will only, and is instituted solely for the good of the whole.

  • Section 2. People may alter or abolish form of government ­ proviso. The people of this state have the sole and exclusive right of governing themselves, as a free, sovereign and independent state; and to alter and abolish their constitution and form of government whenever they may deem it necessary to their safety and happiness, provided, such change be not repugnant to the constitution of the United States.
So why do we face this challenge?

Ref. "O" was slipped onto the ballot in the last hours of the last day of the session. It was massively amended the day before. These radical changes were never reviewed in committee. No public testimony was allowed on them. The fix was in.

Ref. "O" is the scheme of an unholy cabal of citizen-hating elitists, manipulators who condemn the petition process as "too easy" though they have never collected even 100 signatures in their lives, much less 120,000, the number now needed. Spineless legislators are their pawns and do their bidding. Of course, legislaotrs also welcome the Ref. "O" strangulation of any competing source of legislative power, even from the very people they were elected to serve.

Listen (click the play button) to Rep. Alice Madden, the House Majority Leader, a self-proclaimed Boulder liberal, who brazenly brags on the House floor, "...we are restricting the right of the People to petition the government." She's proud of it!

Listen (click the play button) to Winter Park Rep. Al White, who sneered in a taped committee hearing that our Constitution, the people's law, was "like a roll of toilet paper." Even though he took a solemn oath to uphold the Constitution, he has also publicly called that sacred document a "mutt, mongrel, and cur." He drips with contempt his scorn for your rights as a citizen and your decisions to limit government.

These are not nice people. This is not an honest difference of opinion. This is an attempt to use the election process to enslave you, to strip you of your legal ability to resist their assaults on your liberty, to tie your hands so you cannot fight back ever again, against their plans to trash the Constitution and seize absolute power.

You owe it to your family, and your posterity, to sacrifice for freedom. The Founding Fathers pledged "our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor" to the cause of liberty through limited government. What we are asking you to do here seems trivial by comparison, but it is the only avenue for an unfunded grassroots group to resist tyranny.

We want you to do that at least once, and soon, but preferably once a week until November 4th. We provide the fliers; you provide the hands. The work is not hard, but it is essential. If "O" passes, don't complain, "Why didn't anyone tell me this was happening?" We just did.
